XLnotes

When Excel Comments are not Enough

The main purpose behind XLnotes is to introduce a new "flexible" dimension to Excel, so you can now add all kinds of useful data to your spreadsheets. Combined with XLnotes, Excel is an ideal free form structure to gather and visualize multiple data such as concepts, numbers, notes, pictures, web pages, and files. The result is much more convenient than rigid, tree structure note taking or frequently cluttered mind maps!

This video demonstrates main features of XLnotes:

  • Creating text notes
  • Using templates
  • Linking spreadsheet and notes data
  • Saving web pages and bookmarks to notes
  • Attaching files to notes
  • Importing and exporting data to cells and comments
  • Searching in notes
  • Merging and copying notes

How does it work?

After you install XLnotes, a notes tab will appear on the ribbon (in Excel 2007 and 2010) or in the menu (in Excel 2003). Adding notes is simple: you can choose to add notes to a selected cell either from the context menu (right click on the cell) or from the notes tab on the ribbon. Notes can contain rich text (with pictures, hyperlinks, and lists), files (shortcuts or attachments), and web pages (bookmarks or copies). You can copy and paste your XLnotes data between sheets and workbooks, as well as import and export the content of notes to cells, comments, and files. XLnotes doesn’t affect your Excel functions and files in any way, so you can work with your Excel workbooks that contain notes as usual. XLnotes allows you to enter hundreds of notes in a single Excel workbook, but this will not affect Excel’s speed.

Why XLnotes?

Microsoft Excel is perhaps one of the world’s most widely used software programs. Many Excel users are increasingly requesting something more than a convenient place to store and calculate columns and rows of numbers. True, Excel enables you to enter plain text in cells as Comments, but what if you want to add formatted text, pictures, hyperlinks, and the like to you Excel spreadsheets?

Storing diverse content in Excel is now possible using the XLnotes add-in. In addition to performing calculations, now you can attach rich text notes, files, bookmarks, and web pages to cells in Excel. In one application XLnotes combines the functions of spreadsheets, word processors, and web browsers, so you can use Excel as a base for projects that involve various tasks such as mind mapping and note taking.
